A GRADE NETBALL FINISHES

For the second successive season, A Grade Netball has fallen to St Marys in the Preliminary Final.
In an intense battle raged in warm conditions at Corio Leisuretime Centre, St Marys pulled away from the Roosters in the third term and eventually rounded out a 14-goal win on their way to a Grand Final meeting with South Barwon this weekend.
On a disappointing day for her side which promised so much, Senior Coach Jill Leader said; "On the day they just played better han us. We knew we had to stop their attack end but we just found it too hard to do so. They showed patience and they applied pressure." Whilst taking time out to acknowledge the better St Marys' team, Leader can take heart that the completed season was the club's equal best in A Grade. The club as a whole has also been steadily moving up the Club Championship table and with nine sides making it through to finals, somoething is definitely building at West Oval.

Roosters' Netball Has Successful Assault on GFL Awards

By Carrie Rowe

GWSP Netballers came away from the League Awards function early this week with a truckload of awards headlined by Best & Fairest honours for Jess Callaghan (B) and Stacey Johnson (C). Bree Cail & Kaitlyn Amor were also named in the GFL Team of the Year whilst Jess Leader was nominated for Rookie of the Year, an award won by her sister Rachel last season.

Stacey Johnson won the C Grade League B & F
Stacey is a returning player this year and doesn't let too many goalers get the ball in 'her' goal circle.  An elegant defender, you often cannot believe how she can possibly come through and take such clean intercepts.  Having won the club best & fairest we knew she would fair well in the count but thought perhaps another brilliant returning player in Beth Callaghan might steal some of her votes.  That she did, allowing her to finish fourth in the overall count.  However, Stacey polled so well early with 15 votes in the first 5 rounds (3 votes each round) she was going to be hard to catch.  Of course, she ended up winning the count convincingly with her nearest rival 9 votes away.  She has offered so much defensive pressure to the C Grade side which in turn has contributed to their success as minor premiers.  Congratulations Stacey...we are so very proud of you!

Jess Callaghan won the B Grade League B & F
When Jess said she wanted to come back to play we were all very excited, she is such a dynamic goaler to watch...especially those goals when she is slightly off-balanced and falling out of court.  She has certainly added some experience to the B Grade side, as they continue their finals campaign, and her Rooster 'family' is very happy to have her home!  The B Grade count was much closer than the C Grade one with half a dozen girls vying for the award and with one round to go Jess was tied for first spot with two others.  However, after polling in the final round she managed to win by just one vote.  Not only does Jess contribute so much on the court she has also spent endless hours running chocolate drives in the past and more recently designing the new A-line dress (to be unveiled this weekend).  Jess, you may have been a Hot Shot in the past but winning B & F is a fabulous achievement...Congratulations!  Another super Rooster to be proud of!!

Jess Leader was one of four nominees for the Rookie of the Year
Jess was nominated as a first year Rookie in A Grade and although she didn't win the Rookie of the Year she has had an exceptional year, even polling in the A Grade League Vote Count.  It's not just her on court achievements that makes Jess special but what she does for her club as an umpire and ambassador for netball.  Her demeanor and attitude is second to none and I know we will continue to hear about Jess' continued achievements in the future.

A Grade Team of the Year
Bree Cail and Kaitlyn Amor were named in the Team of the Year, with only 9 girls in total making the team.  The Team of the Year is selected by the opposing A Grade coaches so it is such a huge honour for both girls, Bree being named as one of the goalers and Kaitlyn in the centre court.  Although proud of their individual achievements, they, of course, are all business when it comes to the finals and are very eager to hit the court this weekend.  Girls, I sound like a mother hen, not a Rooster, but we are all so unbelievably impressed and proud of your selection, but just make sure you kick some Dragon butt on Sunday.

Finally, after such a successful winning culture on and off the court we were hoping to do well in the Club Championship.  We were so proud to have been announced as runner up behind South Barwon who have won it for the past nine years.  We are certainly closing the gap and in 2012 we might just get there.  To all the players, committee members, coaches, umpires, team managers, and supporters, thank you for making our club what it is... (as Jess Callaghan said in her acceptance speech) ...a family!!

Roosters End Season on a Low.

A disappointing end to the Senior football season with the Roosters being held off by St Albans at West Oval on Saturday by 11 points.

Wayward kicking goal was a crucial factor in the end result with the Supersaints kicking 4.2 to 2.5 in the first term to set up the margin which pretty much stayed as is for the majority of the contest. Nathan Saunders was again in form for the home side with another six major, closing out a fantastic last month of the 2011 campaign for him personally. The St Albans side built on their break at the first change to lead by a comfortable 23-points at the main interval before the Roosters eventually made inroads but could not overcome the margin in the last. Brenton Ritchi also named amongst the best in a very solid past two months for the attacking defender and Kevin Bourke also at his best.

The loss was an unfortunate exclamation point on the final half of the year with GWSP losing eight of their last nine games. A season that started very promising with some wins and huge efforts against the competition's best sides gradually deteriorated through a mass of injuries. However, the uncovering of some fine Under 18 talent coming through with up to six players from the Colts making their debut as well as the recruitment of the classy Tasmanian duo of Nick Buller and Sam Page and Warrnambool lads in Lucas Boyd, Kevin Bourke and James Hussey were undoubted positives and good signs for an improved 2012.

Best & Fairest Results

       Kaitlyn Amor                  Leye Meleisea

Congratulations to our Best & Fairest winners after votes were counted at the annual evening held last Saturday at the clubrooms. Download the results here

In Senior football, talented half-back Leye Meleisea capped off another memorable individual season by claiming back-to-back B&Fs. Meleisea also earned GFL interleague honours in 2011. First year recruit Nick Buller also underlining his stunning debut seaosn by being named Runner-up and defender Sam Page rounding out a Tasmanian trifecta in finishing third.

In the Reserves, Shane Gallagher added to his club resume by winning his first Best & Fairest award in tying with rover Damien Dwyer. For Dwyer however, it was a different story with the joint win his sixth major title, an outstanding effort. Winger Josh Young, who was outstanding in the final two months of the season was just five votes behind in second spot.

Tom Caldow proved the best player for the Under 18s in 2011 with Ryan Robertson in second place. Tom has a bright future at West Oval after also making his senior debut during the season.

In Netball, Kaitlyn Amor also made it back-to-back awards after a completely dominant season in the Centre for A Grade. She will be a huge factor in the Roosters' finals campaign. Ash Salter a former dual winner herself was Runner-up. Jess Callaghan, who brought up her 150th game just last week registered her first B&F win in taking the B Grade award ahead of Kath Mallon. In C Grade Stacey Johnson claimed the honour ahead of Jess' sister Beth whilst in D Grade Lauren Kavenagh was named B&F with Cath Ryan Runner-up. It was then Jess Lenehan named as the Under 19 Best & Fairest in the side's debut year ahead of Laura McDonald.

100 Games for Josh Young

This week's game against St Albans mark 100 games for Josh Young at West Oval. The skilled and dangerous winger has been in outstanding form over the past month or more in the reserves with his signature long-range and pin-point kicking proving as reliable as ever. Young won the Under 18 best and fairest before graduating to senior ranks where he has played the majority of his time on a wing in the seniors. He runs all day until there is nothing left in the tank and has been a reliable goalkicker through his time in senior football. Lining up for game number 100 he continues a great family legacy with father Rod one of the all-time greats at St Peters throughout the 80's. Well done Josh and congratulations on a great senior career thus far.

150 Games up for Jess Callaghan!

A big CONGRATULATIONS to Jess Callaghan for playing in her 150th game against Grovedale on the weekend. Despite nursing an injury she powered through and helped the girls achieve a comfortable win. WELL DONE JESS!
