Reserves fight their way to Preliminary

An inspirational comeback by the Reserves side put a Geelong West-St Peters senior football team into a Preliminary final for the first time in 14 years on Sunday when the Roosters overcame a nine point defecit at 3/4 time to register a hard fought 13 point win in the wet. Mitch Wight irrepressible in the final term with three goals and Josh Young a tireless worker through the centre of the ground.

Netball season finishes

A tight two goal defeat by A Grade headlined a trio of losses from our reminaing teams in finals on the weekend with the senior girls dipping out to St Marys and Under 15s and Under 17s also both going down in close games. The Roosters lead by as many as seven goals at half-time in the A Grade game before an inspired St Marys combination fought back hard and drew level at the last change before grinding out a two goal win; 43-41. Goal Keeper Kerri Barr starred for her side along with sharpshooter Bree Cail and Lauren Keating. The Preliminary Final defeat and subsequent third placing the best finish by a GWSP A Grade team in the club's GFL history. Well done.

MELEISEA CLAIMS B&F IN DEBUT SEASON

The outstanding debut season of half back Leye Meleisea was set in stone last week when the silky Tasmanian claimed the Senior football best & fairest. Meleisea missed a stretch of games in the middle of the challenging season due to a calf injury but still had enough outstanding performances in the bank to tally 100 votes and win by 21 votes from rover Liam Rock. For Rock, it was his second consecutive runner-up award after finishing second to ruckman Michael Stewart last year and puts the exclamation point on his worth as one of the club's best recruits in recent times. First year rover Brydon Coles was third one further vote behind on 78 whilst Adam Morrow (72) and ruck Andrew Walsh (67) rounded out the top five. Meleisea's run and carry and pin-point passing was a feature of his play throughout the season and Rooster supporters have been warmed by the fact that the former Tassie Mariner has committed to the club for next season.

Amor claims A Grade B&F

Centre Kaitlyn Amor held off sharpshooter Bree Cail by just one vote to claim her first A Grade Best & Fairest award. The award was yet another accolade for the speedy pivot who has also been named in the GFL Team of the Year and will form a vital link in the Roosters' tilt at their first ever A Grade premiership. Cail also has had an outstanding season with the Geelong Cougars GA also joinging Amor in the Team of the Year. Reliable defender Tania DuPlessis was third on 31 with Kerri Barr (26) and the consistent Vanessa Cuthbert (17) also amongst the top placegetters.

AUS Legend Simon McKinnis pays a visit to the Cage...

Former Australian WD and local Geelong girl, Simone McKinnis attended junior training last week.   Simone has been Australian 21/u coach and Head Coach at the AIS for the past 3 years and is about to head to Tanzania to take on a new role as their National Head Coach.  What an amazing opportunity for our girls who were about to start their finals campaign to be treated to one of the country’s most elite coaches.  The girls responded to her coaching really well and learnt some new skills along the way. Thanks to Sharon Gillett for organising this for us.

St Peters Premiership Reunion
A fantastic day had by all as great yarns from that great day back in 1980 were told and told again, re-counting the famous Seniors & Reserves premierships. The first flags won by the club. With the video providing the replay of the big game, president at the time Greg Welsh welcomed his formed team mates and re-counted the good ol' days with the Saints reigned supreme at Walker Oval.

Our time has come....

Rachel Leader GFL Rookie of the Year!

Adding to the accolades afforded to the Leader siblings this season was Tuesday night's naming of Rachel Leader as the GFL 'Geelong Advertiser' Rookie of the Year. The award another huge positive for the Roosters' netball programme with their knack of unearthing talented netballers and fine recognition of Rachel's outstanding season as Goal Shooter in the A Grade side. Her team will hope to get back on the winners' list this week and keep their premiership dream alive. Well done Rachel, a fantastic achievement.

SENIOR BEST & FAIREST WINNERS

In other best & fairest results, Reserves football had a tie between young up and comers Scotty Harvey and Tim Wight with both players tasting senior football this year and tying for the award on 72 votes, three ahead of Daniel McNaughton. In B Grade netball, Steph Shell clinched the award by six votes from Emily Rix. Felicity Blenkiron won the C Grade honour by eclipsing Hannah Douglas by eight votes and Laura McDonald blitzed the field to win the D Grade award by 18 votes ahead of Krystle Hiller. Well done to all of our winners!!
