What a year it was....1980.
Most of the world boycotted the Olympics in Moscow, John Lennon was assassinated, The Rubik's Cube was the new must-have item and St Peters Football Club won both Seniors and Reserves Premiership in the GDFL......
St Peters after exhausting all legal and other avenues to stay in the GFL find themselves joining East Geelong in the GDFL. The clubs has one clear agenda and that is to WIN the premiership and increase the pressure on the GFL and the VCFL to have us reinstated to the top competition.
The senior team is boosted by some of the best under 18 graduates of the era; Rod Young, Stephen Sells, Todd McKenzie, John Pickering and Alan Pollard all excel at the senior level and provide the exuberance of youth to a side already boasting some of the best talent in Geelong. Led by club legend, captain and coach, Kevin Hannan the team includes former juniors Pat McFadden, John Boekel, Ashley Connoley and Trevor Wisbey. Recruits Gary Welsh and Wayne Ford add to the excitement as the Saints power through the season losing only the one game by a solitary point in the mud to St Josephs.
Just as importantly the reserves, under the great coaching of Brian Lever go through the season in third spot and and primed for their shot at the flag. Club stalwarts such as Kevin Wilkinson, Dennis Roach, John Smart and Jack Jansen are finally rewarded for their years of loyal service.
What a night (and a few days more) we had at the basketball court in Bell Park, the place was packed and it seemed that every person who had ever had anything to do with the club was there to celebrate. And celebrate we did.
