NETBALL: A GREAT START TO SEASON 2008
by Dawn Douglas
Season 2008 kicked off in awesome form, with 5
of 7 Saturday teams winning, and 3 of 5 Friday
teams also scoring victories.
The little U11s went down by a few goals despite
strong games from new players Allanah Banano,
Chiara Caruana and Grace Waldron.
U13s Red found the going tough but were well
served by Maddie Robinson and new comers Shannon
Dunn and Gracie Lugiani. U13Blue scored a huge
win, the whole team played well, in particular
Cathryn Eastman, Holly Fenton and Georgia
Caruana.
U15s also won easily, the best players were
Steph Gross, Elizabeth Crossan and new player
Gabby Cincotla.
To complete a successful night the U17s recorded
a big win, the best efforts came from Jess
Young, Alice Eastman and Lou Rix.
Saturday morning saw many nervous players,
coaches and officials. But the nervous energy
was put to good use, with lots of wins and two
close defeats.
U13s let the game get away in the first quarter
and had to play catch up all game, Cathryn
Eastman was best on, supported by Jess Leader
and Mary Waldron, the girls went down by 10.
The U15 game saw the only other loss for the
day, the girls going down by 6. New players
Paris Kontelj and Holly Spears were the best
players along with Mollie Roberts.
The U17s staged a great come back after being
down at quarter time to win by 6 goals. Aleisha
Hook was the best player along with Rachel
Leader who shot 20 of the 29 goals. Ashleigh
Quinn was also good in defence.
The D grade girls came out firing and took the
game away to record a 26 goal win. Returning
player Ashton Jerinic was the best player along
with Rachael Wheeler and Lauren Mohr.
C grade also recorded a big win (15 goals) New
player Lick Blendiron was the best on court,
along with the perennial Kathy Huntley-Mitchell
and Gayle Hartshorne (who score 32 of the 36
goals).
B grade came away with the biggest win of the
day, a 34 goal victory. Renee Scott carved it up
in centre, while the Callaghan twins revelled in
playing together.
A grade started shakily but then settled to
power away to a 29 goal win. New comer Bree Cail
was the best on superbly against tough defence.
Ash Salter was also a strong contributor in the
centre court.
So after a great start to the season, this week
we host Grovedale at home; this should see some
very competitive games.
50 GAMES FOR
GAYLE HARSHORNE
Congratulations go
to Gayle Hartshorne on notching up 50 games for
the Roosters. Gayle started at West in A grade,
since then she has played in finals in both B
and C grade. Gayle is a goaler and is deadly
accurate from anywhere in the ring. As well as
playing, Gayle has coached juniors and this year
has taken on the job of B grade coach. Well done
Gayle.
