ROOSTERS TO MEET NORTH SHORE UNDER LIGHTS

Tomorrow night the Roosters will play North Shore under lights at West Oval. The senior match will start at 6.00pm. The reserves will start at 4.00pm and the Under 18s at 2.00pm.

This will be our only night game of the year so we would love to see a huge crowd in attendance.

All netball matches will be played at their normal starting times so it is a great opportunity for all supporters to see a big day’s action at West Oval.

NETBALL: ANOTHER SENSATIONAL ROUND AT LARA
by Claire Brushfield and Dawn Douglas

Last week’s round of netball was another sensational effort by the entire club. Supporters, players, coaches and officials were all lucky with beautiful weather to cheer the girls on at Lara.

The round started off with the juniors on Friday having lots of their buddies head down to Kardinia to watch the girls take away several wins. Saturday saw cheering, coaching and lots of support by all the girls. Our club’s atmosphere must be very intimidating at the moment!!

Friday night saw a mixed bag of results. The U11s continue to improve every week and there are already some glimpses of some future club champions. This week the best players were Holly Harbison and Mollie Gribble.

U13s Red found the going tough, and suffered a significant loss. Mel Menzel was the best player, she was helped out by Sabrina Yewdell (playing her 5oth game) and Jaqueline Tasevski. U13 Blue pulled off a stunning victory, with Kathryn Eastman, one of the best on court, goaling in the final 2 seconds to secure a one point victory. Georgie Payne celebrated her birthday by being best, well supported by Angie Sparks.

The U15s had a whopping 26 goal win, with Erin Douglas taking over the reins as coach from club stalwart Tara Hyatt. Emma Barrett was the best along with Paris Kontelj and Elizabeth Crossan.

The U17s were unlucky going down by 6 goals despite the efforts of Megan Sells, Steph Shell and Lousie Rix.

Saturday’s Under 13’s was a close competitive game with GWSP taking a close win 18 goals to Lara’s 16. Jess Leader, Bianca Cafarella and Kathryn Eastman all playing best on court efforts.

Under 15’s was a match to watch with Holly Speirs, Bridget Byrnes and Keely Dunn playing brilliant matches. Unfortunately the girls went down by 8 goals.

Under 17’s were pushed from the start by Lara who played a steady game of netball. GWSP putting up a fight, but Lara took the win 36 goals to 26. Well done to Zoe Tompkins, Steph Schell and Jess Denny who put in strong efforts on the court.

D grade went into their match hungry for a win and came out very full after comfortably taking the win 48 goals to Lara 18. An injury early on to Ashton Jerinic saw Zoe Tompkins step up into Goal Defence. Best on court this week went to Claire Brushfield, Lauren Mohr and Leanne Welsh.

C grade had GWSP in front for the entire game, ending up taking the win by 4 goals. Gail Hartshorne with impressive accuracy was a pleasure to watch, with Erin Douglas and Stacey Whiteford proving strong in the defence end.

B grade was much more tense, leaving us up and down off our seats all match. A strong game, with Lara coming back in the dying minutes to even the score to leave the match with a draw. Beth Callaghan continues to be strong in mid court, with Stacey Henneman playing a blinder in Goal Keeper. Well done to Lauren Byrnes as well.

A grade continued their fine form this season with a win over Lara on Saturday. A powerful match was played by the whole team – all hungry for the win over an experienced Lara. GWSP took the win 43 goals to Lara 39. Bree Cail was on fire in the goal ring, Lisa Jones proving strong in defence and Sharon Gillett fast across mid-court. An impressive match to watch ladies!

Saturday saw GWSP take away 4 wins, 2 loses and 1 draw. Well done ladies! We look forward to seeing what is made of our next match at home against the Seagulls.

I also just want to put in a very big WELL DONE to all the ladies who attended the Reverse Raffle at the club last week. It was a HUGE success for the club, and a great fundraising effort by all the girls. Thank you also to Laura, Emily, Luke and Ben on the social committee who continue to provide us with entertaining functions and successful fundraisers!!! We really do appreciate all you are doing for the club. THANK YOU!

13 AND UNDERS STARS SELECTED IN THE GFL REP TEAM

Congratulations to Jess Leader and Maggie Douglas on their selection in the GFL Under 13 team to contest the state championships at Diamond Creek next weekend. Best wishes from everyone at the Roosters girls.

50 GAMES FOR SABRINA AND MADDIE

The last 2 weeks have seen two of our U13 players notch up their 50th games for GWSP. Sabrina Yewdall and Maddie Pascal have both played with our club since U11s and have both grown in talent and stature. Sabrina has developed into an accurate goaler, while Maddie is a tight goal keeper who can also have a run in goal defense. Well done and congratulations to both girls.

ST PETERS HERITAGE WEEKEND IS COMING UP

The St Peters reunion and heritage match weekend kicks off on Thursday, 3rd July with drinks at training, then continues with more drinks on Friday night for the interstate visitors.

PAST PLAYERS GROUPS

We have two groups – CORAS and Fenno’s Fifth quarter. We need volunteers to coordinate the members and preserve the history of the club from various eras so contact Fenno or Kevin Hannan if you can help out or want to join.
